About

Berlenga Grande sits 15 km off the coast of Peniche, an hour and a quarter north of Lisbon, and it is one of the most strictly protected places in Portugal. UNESCO classified the Berlengas a World Biosphere Reserve in 2011, and the island runs on hard limits: a daily visitor cap, a separate ICNF permit to step ashore, a boat that only crosses from Peniche, and weather that can close the sea without notice. That is exactly why it rewards a private day rather than a do-it-yourself trip. You travel with a driver-guide who picks you up at your hotel, arranges the island permit and the boat with a local operator, and handles the timing and the weather so the logistics never land on you. On the island you walk to a 17th-century fort and a working lighthouse, swim in clear coves, and can add a glass-bottom cave tour or snorkeling in the reserve. On the way back, the medieval walled town of Óbidos. Two icons, one day, none of the planning.
