Osaka keeps its contemporary art at street level, behind doors that don't announce themselves — a converted apartment, a building holding four gallery rooms and a bookstore no wider than a hallway. I've been walking into these rooms for over a decade, and this tour is the route I've built out of that habit. We visit three to five galleries in about three hours, groups of six or fewer, always private. If a gallerist or the artist is around, I'll introduce you and translate as we talk. Much of what makes it worth doing happens in conversation — about the work, the neighborhood, or what it's like to make things in this city. We close with lunch at a spot I choose; you pay for the meal, but the recommendation is part of the day. I ask what you're actually curious about before deciding which doors to knock on. If a slower, smaller way through Osaka's art scene sounds like your kind of afternoon, I'd be glad to show you the route I've built.
