- Mofongo. Mashed fried plantains stuffed with garlic + pork rinds (or shrimp, or chicken) — Puerto Rico's signature comfort dish.
- Lechón asado. Whole roasted pork — take a day trip to Guavate ("pork highway") on Sunday for the full experience.
- Alcapurrias. Deep-fried plantain-and-yautía fritters stuffed with beef — beachside snack food.
- Piña colada. Invented at the Caribe Hilton in 1954 — order it where it was born.

Old San Juan is walkable but cobblestones + hills mean comfortable shoes. Free trolley buses circle the old city.
